Signs of Suicide (SOS) Program Information for 8th Grade Students and Parents
October 7, 2019 - October 11, 2019
What the Signs of Suicide Prevention Program is…
- A way to help students recognize the symptoms of depression and warning signs of suicide in themselves or their friends
- Teach them about appropriate steps they should take to get help
What the Signs of Suicide Prevention Program is not…
- A way to diagnose students with depression
The SOS program will…
- Help youth identify the signs and symptoms of depression, suicide, and self-injury in themselves and their peers.
- Protect students by helping them to identify mental health concerns and encourage them to seek help from trusted adults.
- Learn the ACT model.
What parent can do:
- Do not be afraid to talk to your child about suicide and mental health.
- Know the risk factors and warning signs of youth suicide.
- Respond immediately if your child is showing warning signs.
- Restricting access to lethal means, especially access to firearms, is very important in preventing youth suicide.
- Reach out to the school for resources.
The program will consist of:
- A video about depression, the signs of suicide and the steps you take if you feel you or a friend is at risk.
- A depression screening form for the student to complete.
- A list of coping strategies for the students.
- Exit ticket
The SIGNS OF SUICIDE program will be presented to 8th grade students ONLY the week of October 7 to 11, in their Health & PE classes. For more information on the SOS program, or on the ACT model, click here.
