DESCRIPTION:The WMS PTA is hosting a Spring Snack Attack for Teachers and Staff on Wednesday\, March 13\, 2019 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm.    \nAs in past years\, we need your help/donations for this much appreciated gesture for the hardworking WMS Staff (180 staff members and teachers!). Our goal is to collect gift cards from local grocery stores (such as Safeway\, Giant\, or Harris Teeter) and retail establishments (such as Target\, Marshalls\, TJ Maxx\, Burlington Coat Factory\, or Ross) for $25 to $50. \nIf you would like to support this important cause\, please sign up at Wolves Helping Wolves 2018 so that we can begin tracking donations. DESCRIPTION:Snack Attack for Teachers on Thursday\, October 25\, 2018 (conference day)\, from 3-4:30 pm \n\n\n\n\nWMS Parent-Teacher Conference SNACK ATTACK\nOctober 25\, 2018 from 3:00 – 4:30\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery year the WMS PTA hosts a SNACK ATTACK on the first day of fall Parent-Teacher conferences.  Conferences start at 4:30 PM so this SNACK ATTACK is being coordinated to provide a snack/early dinner for 180 teachers and staff members so they will be well fueled as they meet with parents.\n\nAs in past years\, we need your help/donations for this much appreciated gesture for the hardworking WMS Staff.  Provided below is a link to sign up to donate to the menu and/or help with setup\, staffing\, and cleanup.  Most quantities are by the dozen so feel free to sign up for multiple slots.  The PTA will be providing sandwich platters\, ice for the drinks\, and decorations.\n\nAll contributions (marked for SNACK ATTACK and in disposable serving trays) need to be dropped off by 2:30 PM in the Staff Lounge the day of the event.  Non-perishables may be dropped off the day before or earlier in the day on the 25th.  You can also reach out to Kim Phillips (703.622.2013\, kimjames@hotmail.com) to coordinate an alternate drop off location/time.\n\nPlease sign up now.

DESCRIPTION:October PTA Meeting – Learn More About Sharp Increase in Teen E-Cigarette Use\n\n\n\n\nMorgane Bennett\, Senior Research Associate at Schroeder Institute\, and Amy Taylor\, Senior VP for Community and Youth Engagement\,Truth Initiative will be presenting on e-cigarettes and JUUL at the October 9 PTA meeting. The Food and Drug Administration issued a statement this month saying that there is a “disturbingly sharp rise in the number of teens using e-cigarettes.”  Many are pointing to JUUL as the culprit for rise in teen use.\n\nJUUL is latest vaping product that has sparked widespread concern among public health officials\, medical professionals\, school administrators and parents. Parents should know more about JUUL because of its powerful punch of nicotine and that it may be putting a new generation of youth at risk of tobacco use and nicotine dependence.\n\nAlso presenting will be Kelly Decker from Second Chance Arlington\, an educational program for Arlington middle and high school students who have been experimenting with alcohol and/or drugs. The program helps teens learn how substance use affects their physical and mental health so they can avoid using drugs and alcohol.\n\n\nPlease join us at 7:00pm on October 9th for the meeting in the WMS library.

SUMMARY:Annual 8th Grade Casino Night
DESCRIPTION:At Casino Night\, students will be given fake money to play a variety of casino games. Each of them will be given the same amount of fake money\, and they’ll need to use their math skills to manage cash flow throughout the evening .  Once their fake money is spent\, the kids will not have more to play with. Their winnings can be turned in to be raffle tickets and used for gift card prizes. The week after Casino Night\, the raffles will be drawn and announced during lunch.\nIn addition to the casino games\, and for those who don’t choose to play the games\, as well as the ones who run out of fake money\, we’ll have a number of other fun activities.  So far\, our plans include a DJ\, and a selfie photo booth. We’re also looking into a few other options.\nThroughout the years\, the dress has been sports coats and ties for the boys and cocktail dresses for the girls.  While this has been the norm\, students are welcome dress however they’d like to\, as long as they meet Williamsburg dress codes.  Previously the length of cocktails dresses and the width of the straps of the dresses has demanded attention. Please remember the requirements as you and yours are deciding what they’ll wear.\nCasino Night is only for WMS 8th Graders.  Students from other middle schools will be turned away.\nTo make the casino games work\, there will be professional dealers to oversee and help with the games .  Parents who volunteer to be dealers will be trained by the dealers for one hour before we open the doors to the kids.  Throughout the evening\, food and drinks will be provided to those volunteers.\nIn the coming weeks\, we’ll send a Sign up Genius for volunteers to help throw this last party.  We will have many ways that you can contribute to these festivities. Please sign up and help make this a special night.  Casino Night will be funded by the 8th Grade Activity Fund.
