Please plan on joining us at the next PTA meeting on October 8 at 7 pm in the library.
Classroom grants, school socials and staff appreciation are just some of ways the WMS PTA enriches our school. Many hands make light work and we need your help to put on our events throughout the year. Watch out for opportunities to volunteer here in the weekly PTA newsletter

Signs of Suicide (SOS) Program Information for 8th Grade Students and Parents

October 3, 2019 by Liz Crescioli

What the Signs of Suicide Prevention Program is…

  • A way to help students recognize the symptoms of depression and warning signs of suicide in themselves or their friends
  • Teach them about appropriate steps they should take to get help

What the Signs of Suicide Prevention Program is not…

  • A way to diagnose students with depression

The SOS program will…

  • Help youth identify the signs and symptoms of depression, suicide, and self-injury in themselves and their peers.
  • Protect students by helping them to identify mental health concerns and encourage them to seek help from trusted adults.
  • Learn the ACT model.

What parent can do:

  • Do not be afraid to talk to your child about suicide and mental health.
  • Know the risk factors and warning signs of youth suicide.
  • Respond immediately if your child is showing warning signs.
  • Restricting access to lethal means, especially access to firearms, is very important in preventing youth suicide.
  • Reach out to the school for resources.

The program will consist of:

  1. A video about depression, the signs of suicide and the steps you take if you feel you or a friend is at risk.
  2. A depression screening form for the student to complete.
  3. A list of coping strategies for the students.
  4. Exit ticket

The SIGNS OF SUICIDE program will be presented to 8th grade students ONLY the week of October 7 to 11, in their Health & PE classes. For more information on the SOS program, or on the ACT model, click here.

A copy of the presentation video and assessment will be available on the Williamsburg Middle School website to review a week prior to the lessons.

If you have any questions, please contact Gretchen Brenckle, 8th grade counselor.
